Rigged smallest everything, honking, pissing down. Had a hard time getting out because the wind seemed very onshore, also the waves quite strong and sucky, so got on and fell off a few times, all the while being blown down wind. Ended up about 3 groynes down, struggled back upwind on the beach, went for cup of coffee with Mike T! Suitably refreshed, accosted Bill T who was looking at my kit, then picked it up and ran for it! Made it out with little trouble, stormed off, good conditions really. Gybe attempt failed, although not bad, got up, hammered off up wind of Inn-o-t-Beach, scarcely able to see with the hammering rain and spray, quite disoriented. Turned towards the beach, fell off. At this point not sure how I lost contact with the kit, but I did, and it shot off downwind really fast - couldn't swim up to it at all! Fellow sailor rescued it, and I walked up and out. Wow. That was it, but exhilarating. Very conscious of being on edge of capability, so stopped while ahead. None of my mates who were present went in, so big up to me!!
